PHILGOV: Wedding practices/Customs/Traditions/Trivias

Masbate Wedding Practices

Both of my parents grew up in Masbate. Masbate is an island province of the Philippines located in the Bicol Region. Its capital is Masbate City and consists of three major islands: Masbate, Ticao and Burias. But I am not here to lecture you about this province’s geography and history. I am here to share to you SOME interesting wedding traditions from Masbate.
Since Masbate is a part of the Philippines and it’s not that far from the Tagalog region the wedding traditions are not that different.

It has been customary that if a man wants to marry, he must be capable of giving a dowry, dote or bigay-kaya. The man can give land, poultry house, animals or money for a dote. The woman is not obliged to give something to the man.

One of the most popular wedding superstitions dictates that the groom should not see the bride until just before the ceremony. Bad luck can come their way if they lay eyes on each other, because they have glimpsed the future before it happened. They should also avoid being photographed together before the wedding day.
But in Masbate, the night before the wedding day, they have a party. They call this party Likod Likod. The soon to be groom and bride attends this party together. They eat and dance at the party. They are also forbidden to go anywhere because they believe that it is dangerous for them to go somewhere else just before the wedding day.

I guess you have seen a lot of movies that the man and woman goes in the church separately. But in Masbate, they go to the church together.  And mostly, the couples just walk from the house to the church while others ride a carabao.

At a wedding, the bride and the groom walks side by side to the altar  because they believe that if couples go together, their relationship will last.

At the reception, they usually do the money dance. The groom's family puts money on the bride and vice-versa. They do this to wish a wealthy living for the newlyweds.
